EU: Microsoft Hit With €500m Fine
The European Union has claimed that Microsoft has "abused its dominant position" as its rationale for ordering the computer software giant to pay a fine of €497m (which is $613m or £331m).

US software giant Microsoft said on Friday that it was confident that it would succeed in an appeal against a European Union ruling that it had abused its market dominance.

Microsoft has bowed to pressure from the European Commission to name a new version of its Windows XP software, Windows XP Home Edition N.
It is the US software giant's latest step in complying with the EU, following a record anti-trust fine imposed on it last year.
The 'N' in the new name stands for "not with media player".

The European Union has taken new legal steps against Microsoft to ensure better compliance with its 2004 antitrust ruling.
The decision on Thursday threatens fines of up to €2m ($2,37m) a day if the software giant does not meet the antitrust demands.

Microsoft Corp. will be fined if it keeps up its current conduct, the EU's antitrust chief warned Thursday after the company accused the EU of withholding documents and colluding with Microsoft's rivals before filing charges last December.

Microsoft Corp. said Friday it had made a breakthrough in its antitrust case with the European Union after an independent monitor outlined what it could do to stave off daily fines of $2.4 million.
EU officials and Microsoft rivals, however, expressed doubts.
