The State Department on Wednesday endorsed a Senate investigation into possible fraud in the UN Oil-For-Food programme while sidestepping a senator's demand that Secretary General Kofi Annan resign.

Because if he did he would implicate himself and his family and thus drag down the credibility of the UN and the officers of the same yet even further...

Somewhere in the horde of Clinton pardon recipients was financier Marc Rich. In 1983, Rich was indicted on evading more than $48m in taxes. He was also charged with 51 counts of tax fraud, tax evasion, wire fraud, racketeering, and making illegal oil deals with Iran during the 1979 hostage crisis. Rich suffered terribly for his crimes—if you call living well on one’s ill-gotten gains in Switzerland while fighting extradition proceedings “suffering.” Denise Rich, now his ex-wife, donated an estimated $1m to Democrat causes, including $70000 to Hillary Clinton’s Senate campaign and $450000 to the Clinton Presidential Library fund.

UN chief Kofi Annan has been handed a report which says the organisation's oil-for-food operation in Saddam Hussein's Iraq was "tainted".
Inquiry chief Paul Volcker says the UN official in charge violated rules on sales and had a "conflict of interest", but that abuse was not widespread.

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has admitted there were hard knocks for the UN in a report on the mismanagement of the oil-for-food programme in Iraq.
Mr Annan said that any suggestion of corruption was harmful and dangerous for the UN, and pledged to act.
