Royal Mint Plans New Designs For British Coins

NEW LOOK COINS FOR UK

SKY NEWS
1843gmt Wednesday 17th August 2005

Six British coins are to be redesigned for the first time since decimalisation in 1971, the Royal Mint has said.

The move has sparked claims that Britain has no intention of joining the euro in the forseeable future.

They argue that a redesign would not be undertaken if the pound was about to be ditched.

The Royal Mint is holding an open competition to find new designs for the tails side of the 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p and 50p coins.

With the exception of the 20p, first issued in 1982, the reverse designs of coins from 1p to 50p were chosen in the late 1960s.

The Mint says they are to be changed to reflect modern Britain.

Chancellor Gordon Brown has agreed to the move and will have to approve the new coins.

The Treasury is insisting the change has nothing to do with the euro.

However, Neil O'Brien, of the Vote No campaign, said: "I don't think anybody believes there is any prospect of us joining the euro in the foreseeable future.

"Today's announcement shows institutions are planning on that basis."
