Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer says the return of Australian police officers currently in Papua New Guinea is still being organised.

About 160 police are on standby to be sent home to Australia after the PNG Supreme Court found their powers and immunity from prosecution had not been legally granted.

Mr Downer says he hopes the Australian and PNG governments can discuss what can be done next week.

He says in the meantime the departure of Australian police from PNG is imminent.

"The risks involved from them being on the ground without the appropriate legal cover is such that we'd rather have them back in Australia and there be no risks," Mr Downer said.
